Suzuki Method

“Connecting the ART of music with the HEART of the child.”

Deborah combines Suzuki Music Education with traditional note-reading in her home studio, located in Wissota Woods on Lake Wissota in Chippewa Falls (15 miles north of Eau Claire).

Most students begin with the Suzuki approach, based on the “mother-tongue” method. The Suzuki approach differs from traditional methods of teaching instrumental music because it involves the student at a very early age (as young as 3), and is based on a “triangle of love”—the student, the parent(s) or grand-parent(s), and the studio teacher.  Daily listening to the recordings of the songs is a vital part of each day’s “practice,” as is daily practice and encouragement at home.  The child’s ear is developed before note-reading, just as we teach children to read a language only after they can speak.  Thus, the main initial focus is the sound: beautiful tone, accurate rhythm and musical phrasing.  Through the Suzuki growing process, children develop confidence and self-esteem, determination to try difficult things, self-discipline and concentration. 

Deborah’s style of teaching changes with each individual student.  She incorporates drums, tambourines, musical stories and sometimes even movement to engage the student.  Lessons are rewarding, fun and motivational.  Once the ear is developed, Deborah introduces note-reading and theory, and middle-school and high school students enjoy including jazz in their repertoires.    Often, students surprise and delight their parent(s) and/or grand-parents and Deborah with their own arrangements or compositions!

Two recitals/parties are held each year—one during the Christmas Season and one in the Spring. Tuition also includes two group lessons, one in the Fall and one in the Summer (including tossing water balloons to rhythms!)
